STARLINGS OVER BRIGHTON PIER • Each winter, Brighton Beach becomes a gathering point for starling murmurations, particularly around the remains of the West Pier. From October to March, up to 40,000 starlings arrive at dusk from surrounding rural areas to roost. They form dense, shifting flocks in the sky, a behaviour thought to confuse predators such as peregrine falcons and help the birds stay warm through collective movement. The starlings perform coordinated aerial patterns just before sunset, then settle into sheltered structures – most commonly the West Pier’s ironwork – for the night. The starlings return each evening from feeding grounds in the countryside, often travelling up to 20km. Their murmuration lasts for 20 to 30 minutes before they land, and they repeat the cycle daily throughout the winter months.
